Product description
In the northern part of Italy there are small communities speaking archaic German dialects. The Cimbers, the Mokens, the Carinthians and the Walsers moved to their present-day residence in the Middle Ages, and have preserved their language and culture to this day. With the end of the traditional way of life, the population of the villages between the mountains of the Alps began to decrease. Many people emigrated, the majority of those who stayed at home today make a living from tourism. The book presents the four small language islands in their Italian environment, based on a sociolinguistic survey conducted by the author between 2013 and 2015. The main chapters are supplemented with descriptions of the history and names of the language communities, and in some pages we can learn about the situation of a Hungarian-speaking island, the Csángós, in comparison with the German-speaking islands in Italy, about whom the author previously wrote a separate book ("We speak Csangóul").
