To date, no large, authoritative monograph has been published on János Arany. Márton Szilágyi's Golden Book, although admittedly not written to fill this gap, is much more than a collection of thematic studies. After the opening text summarizing the changes in the social status of Arany, the work, which consists of art analysis-problem-focused chapters, deals with the two most important directions of his oeuvre, the verse epic and the lyric. The volume, which articulates many new aspects, deals with Arany's little-analyzed occasional poetry as well as with the connections of the narrative poems or the writer's search for a way before and during 1848, but the author also finds a fruitful point of view for the interpretation of the well-known Arany ballads by examining the eerie. He does all this with his usual literary historical erudition and philological thoroughness, with which the chapters of this book, which are complex in themselves and full of subtle insights, paint a picture not only of a career, but also of a writer. Márton Szilágyi's volume of this composition is able to show not only the large format and extraordinary nature, but also the sensitive discipline and poignancy exercised over his own oeuvre, the struggling Gold - and in a precise and personal way at the same time. In a word: filling the gaps.
