In that era, which can be called pre-scientific, people were not embarrassed when it came to explaining dreams. If they remembered it after waking up, they saw it as a benevolent or hostile manifestation of higher, divine or diabolical powers. With the flourishing of the scientific way of thinking, this whole meaningful mythology was transformed into psychology, and today only a very small minority of educated humanity doubts that the dream is the dreamer's own spiritual creation. But since the mythological assumption was dropped, the dream demands a new explanation. The conditions of its origin, its relation to the spiritual world of the waking state, its dependence on the stimuli that rush towards awareness during the sleep state, its content has many peculiarities that offend waking thinking, the disproportion between the images imagined in it and the emotions associated with them, and finally the fragrance of the dream, the way in which thinking, as foreign to him, is pushed aside, his memory is mutilated or extinguished: all these problems and many others have been waiting for a solution for centuries, but so far they have not been able to do so in a satisfactory way.
