Product description
Does art exist without culture, and does it make sense to talk about culture without considering art as part of it? What new problems, situations, and realizations resulted in the historical avant-garde in the complex relationship between art and culture, and what were the neo-avant-garde? Tamás Seregi's book seeks answers to these complicated questions. In the first half of the volume, we can read case studies on the historical avant-garde, Lajos Kassák, then on certain dilemmas of the neo-avant-garde, László Moholy-Nagy, Ernő Kállai, and Károly Sirató Tamkó, which are connected in many respects and consistent in identifying the directions of the questions and creating the path leading to the answers. The second part of the book is a large-scale essay on the never-ending relationship between art and culture: is art part of culture, or have certain versions always been outside of it, precisely because they were not able to become an area of operation, i.e. domesticate? The history of art and culture after the Enlightenment leads us to the very practical question of our days: what is the role of the artist in cultural production?
