Product description
In Spanish cultural life, we can talk about the emergence of the so-called new Spanish theater from approximately the beginning of the 1990s; it was at this time that the changes that came with the end of the Franco dictatorship (1975), the abolition of censorship, the more conscious professional training of playwrights and the departure from the previous tradition, reached the theater life of Spain. This new, more universal voice, moving away from everyday Spanish reality, speaks to the audience through more personal, but not autobiographical themes. The authors talk about general human issues that easily resonate in the viewers' inner world due to their closeness to people; they depict the reality surrounding them in small life situations, often without more complex dramatic action. The performances, on the other hand, do not expect society to change, the world filtered through the reference system of individual playwrights is described without explanation or interpretation of any kind; they have no didactic intent whatsoever. The nine dramas selected for the volume - like the theater of Spanish memory and intimacy in general - approach universal human themes that are never bound to place and time, but, as before, in the XVI-XVII. the works of the Spanish golden age theater of the 19th century will still be able to appeal to the reader and the audience decades later.
