Product description
Between 2005 and 2009, in Bolivia, in a remote, hidden Mennonite settlement, hundreds of girls and women woke up in the morning groggy, covered in pain, bruised and bleeding after being attacked at night. At first the attacks were attributed to spirits or demons. Some of the community members believed that the attacks were God or Satan punishing the women for their sins; several accused the women of lying in order to attract the attention of the community or to cover up their adultery; and still others thought it was all a figment of women's vivid imaginations.
However, it was eventually revealed that eight male members of the colony were responsible for the attacks. They sedated their victims with an anesthetic used in veterinary medicine, trouser spray, and raped the unconscious women.
A Bolivian court found the eight men guilty in 2011 and sentenced them to long prison terms. But in 2013, while the convicted men were still serving their prison sentences, similar attacks and sexual abuse began again in the colony.
The Women Talk, in which the daughters and women of two families discuss their possible options after what happened - To do nothing / Stay and fight / Leave - is a reaction to these real events in the form of a novel, and at the same time a product of women's imagination.
