There is no other poet in American poetry of the past half century who has caused as many headaches for critics and readers as John Ashbery. His career as a poet began in 1955, but the real breakthrough came for him in the 1975 work, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, which won the triple runner-up of American poetry the following year: the Pulitzer Prize , the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror will become a foundational work of American postmodern poetry, and already in the years surrounding its publication, it is being talked about as a classic of contemporary poetry. One of the milestones of recent world literature can finally be read in Hungarian. John Ashbery (1927-2017) American poet, literary translator, essayist. He was born in Rochester, lived in New York from the beginning of the fifties, and became a defining figure of the New York school of poetry, considered by many critics and literary historians to be the last influential avant-garde group. More than thirty volumes of his poems were published during his lifetime, including perhaps the most important, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror in 1975. He is one of the most influential creators of post-war American and universal lyric. "Among the English poets, no one has a better chance than Ashbery of standing the harsh judgment of time..." - Harold Bloom "A style free from ostentation, a stunning ease of language that almost always enchants... No one writes as Ashbery...” – Paul Auster
