Gerlóczy Gábor - Gerlóczy Gedeon - The architect who saved the image

The birth of modern architecture can be dated to the dawn of the 20th century, so Gedeon Gerlóczy (1895-1975) fortunately became an architect at the time of this change in attitude. From the second half of the twenties - in addition to the weakening historicism, presumably under the influence of the Bauhaus - the constructivist-functionalist trend appeared in our country, followed by modern and postmodern architecture. As one of the defining figures of the design world between the two world wars, Gerlóczy left a significant legacy as an expert in modern hospital design, and he also worked as a teacher of architectural history and urban aesthetics at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. As a newly graduated architect, at the age of twenty-four, guided by a special inspiration, he saved the doomed painting legacy of Kosztka Tivadar Csontváry, and then, for more than fifty-five years, fought tirelessly for the preservation, recognition and placement of the images.
The genius of the creator is loneliness. It is damaged, smelled, buried by everyday life, torn apart by the storms of history. We will never know how many chapters in the history of Hungarian fine arts have remained unwritten forever. The fact that the waving branches of Csontváry Magányos' cedar did not perish as a torn, wind-blown car cover in the whirlwind of Budapest is thanks to the dedication of Gedeon Gerlóczy, the image-saving architect.
