Mihály Babits' fairy tales are primarily intended for adults. He does not build on the tradition of folk tales - he seeks the intellectual adventure of storytelling. His stories are foreboding, suffocating; everything in them is fairy-tale, magical - full of bitterness and an almost improbable, transcendent hope. His heroes are created by anxiety, more than once by despair and longing. This is how the poet pulls himself away from his everyday anxieties in a fantasy world of his own creation, where even wonderful solutions seem possible. The volume is decorated with illustrations by Alexandra Faltisz.
