Product description
William Butler Yeats in the 20th century one of the greatest period poets of the 20th century, this is well known. However, fewer people know that this Nobel Prize-winning writer who works with mythological symbols and folk poetry motifs is also a very important playwright. Among the eleven skits in the volume, there are also mythological and modern ones; some of them have the usual form, some of them rework classical Japanese theater forms, some of them are tragedies and some are comedies, some are in verse and some are in prose form.
In his afterword to the volume, the editor Márton Mesterházi rightly quotes the following sentence from Yeats's Nobel Prize acceptance speech: "If I had only become a lyric poet, if I had not become a representative of a mass movement through the Irish theatre, I believe that the English committees would take my name to the list from which the Swedish Academy selects the award winner."
The translators - Ferencz Győző, László G. István, Ágnes Gergely, Noémi László, Júlia Lázár, Mónika Mesterházi, Anna T. Szabó - made a name for themselves as poets and philologists as well.
WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS (Sadymount, 1865 - Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, 1939) is an Irish poet, playwright, storyteller, Nobel Prize winner for literature (1923), who is considered one of the most outstanding figures of 20th century poetry. He is one of the most intellectual writers working with a huge speculative symbol system. His dramas and stage works testify to an experimental and innovative force that is perhaps even greater than his poetry, and are nourished by the traditions of Japanese no drama and Greek tragedy, among other things.
