Product description
Countless books, studies and articles have been published about Miklós Horthy's person and activities in recent years, but posterity has only been able to know a little-developed phase of his life and career until now. Dávid Turbucz was the first to undertake to present Horthy's naval career between 1882 and 1918, relying on materials found in Hungarian and Austrian public collections, with scientific thoroughness and detail, but at the same time in a readable style.
From the documents, we learn, among other things, why the young Horthy chose to become a naval officer despite his family's opposition, and how the social-loving young man managed to build a network of contacts at the Maritime Academy in Fiume, with which he laid the foundation for his later career, despite his academic difficulties. The author guides his readers through Miklós Horthy's great journey around the world, from the "land of cannibals" through Constantinople to the court in Vienna. We can trace Horthy's positions at sea and on land: we get to know him as the aide-de-camp of József Ferenc, the fast cruiser Novara, and then as the commander of the fleet, and we can find out how the myth of the "Hero of Otranto" came into being, which anticipated the birth of the cult surrounding Horthy's figure.
DÁVID TURBUCZ was born in Budapest in 1984. Graduated from Eötvös Loránd University, majoring in history (2009) and political science (2010). He obtained his doctorate degree under the supervision of Ignác Romsics in 2015 at the Eszterházy Károly College in Eger. Since September 2012, he has been a staff member of the MTA, and since 2019, the ELKH BTK Institute of History. His field of research is the history of the life and judgment of Miklós Horthy.
