Product description
The volume compares the settlements of the four major Armenian centers in Transylvania, Szamosújvár, Erzsébetváros, Gyergyószentmiklós and Csíkszépvíz. In contrast to previous architectural research, which mostly emphasized the differences, the architectural sociology approach used during the research also revealed the similarities arising from the socio-historical environment. The eras that can be detected in the life of each colony, the "establishment of the city", the "orderly independence" and the "national emancipation" of the second half of the 19th century, left marked, comparable architectural imprints in the cityscapes.
Examining the processes of more than two centuries, it can be said that Armenianness played a decisive role in the establishment of major architectural styles (primarily Baroque, later bourgeois historicizing architecture) in Transylvania, and in the regional adoption of the styles. This mediating role is also the basis of the similarity of the Armenian settlement images, it is the basis of their special, art-historically outstanding heritage.
