Product description
Elizabeth Tudor ascended the throne of England at the age of twenty-five. He inherited a religiously divided, economically weakened, war-lost country. Forty-five years later, he left behind a power with a largely unified identity and a flourishing culture that ran the Spanish world empire. This success story deservedly became associated with the queen's name and provided a rich breeding ground for the myth built around her by posterity that continues to this day, which inspired the stage of Shakespeare's time as well as the film directors of the 21st century. The figure of Elizabeth I is not only significant in the area of the island nation or the former British Empire, but the works about her attract the interest of the public all over the world. Each new work goes back to the motifs formed in the life of the Virgin Queen and continues to weave her legend from them.
This monograph aims to present the period of the birth of the myth, the vocabulary and symbolism of the emerging Elizabethan cult to the readership. It provides an insight into the contemporary texts, literary and artistic representations that are largely missing from Hungarian history books, and thus the volume helps the Hungarian audience navigate 16th-century English culture and works about the queen.
