Delmak-O is a strange colony on a strange planet, where a strange company collides, people with different educations and visions, who came here for the most part on the orders of their superiors, although there are also those who come with the power of prayer. When the members of the group try to find out the real purpose of the colony, namely with the help of the satellite orbiting above them, they encounter an insoluble technical problem. They fall into a trap: they can neither leave nor call for help. They are completely left to their own devices.

Soon, a series of bizarre, violent events begins. It's as if the planet's sheer atmosphere causes paranoia and psychosis, causing the interdependent people of the small community to turn against each other instead of coming together. And this time, even prayer won't help; it seems that God is either absent or wants to destroy his creatures.

Philip K. Dick's 1970 novel is both a metaphysical thriller and a meditation on the nature of the divine.
