"This novel is such a complex dance of love, romance, social status and gossip that even Jane Austen would be proud of."
- BookBub
Immediately after the Second World War, in a secluded English village, an unusual group of people with similar interests organizes themselves to create something quite extraordinary.
About a hundred years earlier, the small English village of Chawton was the last home of Jane Austen, one of England's greatest writers. The large house is now inhabited by distant descendants, and the old estate has begun to decline. But enthusiasm for the author and his novels lives on in the village; her ardent fans - the local doctor, the grieving widow, the estate solicitor, the young maid, the lonely farmer and a distant relative of Jane's, along with an art dealer and a famous Hollywood movie star - form the Jane Austen Society to preserve the author's intellectual legacy , and promote his works. However, due to a death, the estate and with it Austen's legacy, thus also the company's mission, are in danger, but by this time the company is much more than that. While the members' lives are overshadowed by countless tragedies and they also have to face the losses caused by the war, they help each other process the traumas they have experienced just as Austen's stories have helped them throughout their lives.
"Whoever is looking for a cure for the chaos of our present world will find a pleasant calm among the members of the company, whose lives may seem simple, but whose souls need the balm of which Jane Austen was an expert." - The Washington Post
