"On July 24, 2016, Mihály Szegedy-Maszák, one of the most influential representatives of Hungarian literary studies of recent decades, passed away. He was already mentioned in the reminiscing writings of colleagues, friends, and students, and even within the given occasional framework, an attempt was made to assess where the most important, or at least currently the most important, layers of the legacy of this oeuvre covering countless specialized fields are revealed. Department I of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Hungarian Literature and Culture of ELTE, and the Institute's Department of Comparative Literature and Culture (which had Szegedy-Maszák between 1994 and 2008 its leader) organized on March 16-17, 2017, the "re-reading memorial conference" with the same title as this volume undertook to collect the first, more elaborated answers to this question. versatility or multi-layeredness taking this into account, the organizers of the conference came to the decision that, as the first step of this undertaking, it is more worthwhile to advocate the preparation of studies that testify to how the various professional workshops are related to the issues that Szegedy- They are at the center of Maszák's writings and his approach to literature and culture (as he was known to be skeptical about the methodological isolation of individual art forms or mediums). Taking these as generally as possible, the choice fell on the three categories highlighted in the title.
