Product description
One morning, before class, a school principal who shows himself to be "inhuman, ordinary and sadistic" reveals the internal similarity of the world and himself by drawing a rhombus symbolizing the female genitalia on the blackboard in the still empty classroom. After some hesitation, he adds an equal sign next to it and writes "director" on the other side of the equation. The school is in turmoil, an investigation committee is formed, everyone is looking for the culprit. As is usually the case, the events unfold, the director who "mocks" his environment and the world is no longer the master of the events and his own destiny. The "divine" situation-creating position becomes a drift, and according to the self-imposed, diabolical rules of the story, the director, who shows an increasingly human face, is buried beneath himself by the events that are now uncontrollable.
Kundera's Hungarian readers are not unfamiliar with this course of dramatic events. It is enough to think of Tréfá or the narratives of Ridiculous loves. From the point of view of common sense, the plot, which unfolds in the wake of a senselessly created conflict and contains countless twists and turns, shows in its fullness what it means when it suddenly turns out that human relations such as power, love, solidarity have nothing to do with the above to advertised real or perceived values. But not even for words. In this upside-down, distorted world, all values and feelings are turned upside down, and despite all subsequent efforts of the dramatic hero, he inevitably falls into his creative game.
