Product description
What would the world be like if, after the Trianon peace decree, Felvidék remained part of Hungary, and Slovakia was never created? What would have happened to the Slovaks?
In Michal Hvorecký's novel, the population emigrating as a result of forced assimilation finds a new homeland in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in French Polynesia, on the beautiful island of Tahiti, which Paul Gauguin also found so picturesque, far from Western civilization. Under the command of the famous diplomat, astronomer, poet, pilot and general, Milan Rastislav ©tefánik, the South Sea dream of the freedom-seeking nation coming from the hellish cauldron of the Tatras and the Danube to the earthly paradise is, however, due to the clashes caused by the traditions, revived nationalism and cultural differences. it quickly turns out to be an air castle.
Nowhere else have we read about the twentieth-century history of Central and Eastern Europe and the worst social tensions (nationalism, anti-democracy) that determine its present in such a creepy and entertaining way, as in this utopian-satirical novel that turns history as we know it upside down.
