Product description
Saint-Malo, France, 1939: Jocelyn, the librarian of Saint-Malo, writes her first secret letter to Marcel Zola, the famous Parisian writer. In the letters, he reports on the daily life of the French city hit by the German occupation, the sufferings of ordinary people, the self-sacrificing courage of the resisters, and what an astonishing persecution the war was for culture and books.
Jocelyn and Antoine get married at the outbreak of war, but the man is soon drafted. Left alone in the face of the cruelty of war, Jocelyn tries to comfort and encourage her community and herself with books. He fights desperately to save the books condemned to death by the Nazis, as well as the priceless human culture and knowledge. Risking arrest and even her life, she manages to hide some books while desperately waiting for news from her husband, Antoine, who is a prisoner in a German camp. Meanwhile, a strange relationship develops between the young woman and Hermann von Choltiz, a German officer assigned to assess the library's holdings and confiscate dangerous books.
Mario Escobar brings the occupied city to life in overwhelmingly romantic prose and recreates the story of those who sacrificed everything to take care of their loved ones.
