Gáspár Heltai was born into a Saxon family in Heltau (Nagydisznód) in Szeban county.
In 1543, he studied in Wittenberg, and from the following year he worked as a Lutheran pastor in Cluj and belonged to the patrician citizenship of the city. As a native German, he preached in German throughout his life, but he learned Hungarian already in his youth, and eventually became a significant figure in Hungarian prose.
