Product description
Following the Battle of Mohács, the Kingdom of Hungary became part of the Habsburg Monarchy, whose center of government and city of residence was Vienna. The imperial city gradually became the center of a Central European empire, visited from time to time by members of Hungarian society in various positions for cultural, networking, political or economic purposes. The year 1711 was a fundamental milestone in the history of integration, and after the Rákóczi War of Independence, Habsburg-Hungarian relations were re-established, which can be seen in the strengthening of the Hungarian presence and position in Vienna. This process unfolded even more spectacularly during the reign of Maria Theresa, when close co-operation was established between the court and the Hungarian political elite. The period between 1711 and 1765 brought significant changes in the rise of the Hungarian nobility in the imperial city, and the Hungarian elite gradually became more and more visible in the urban space, court publicity and governmental-political dimension of Vienna. In this volume, we can get a detailed picture of the different stages of the imperial integration of the Hungarian nobility, from schools through the Habsburg court and central government bodies to the world of representative urban palaces. In the monograph, the author publishes the results of a decade of extensive basic archival research, through which the reader can look at 18th-century Habsburg-Hungarian relations from a whole new perspective.
