"What is this book really about? Obviously, it's not just about the breeds that have the word 'bulldog' in their name (that is, part of it), since then half of the listed dogs would have been left out of the list. So that I don't make the introduction longer than necessary: it is about a thousand years ago in England and parallely in other Western European countries, a wonderful type of dog was developed, the helper of cattle herders and butchers, which was able to stop and capture a wild bull on its own. Thanks to this ability, he later had a great career entered the arenas of animal fights, and its strength and determination became a legend. Depending on the area of ​​distribution, the type is known by different names: the English call it bulldog, the French call it alant, the Germans call it Bullenbeisser, and the Spanish call it alano, however, they all come from the same ancestor and their area of ​​use also agreed.

I have set myself the goal of introducing the reader to the process of the development of the bullfighting and gladiator dogs of the Middle Ages, the tasks we performed, and then starting from there to present the circumstances of the birth of today's popular breeds bred from them, the current situation of these dogs, as well as their character and field of use.
