Product description
The third volume of the Félfomály series is entitled Shadows over Byzantium, and its story tells the antecedents, events and consequences of the Fourth Crusade (1202-04).
At the beginning of the story III. At the call of Ince, the most powerful pope of the Middle Ages, crusaders gather in Venice to launch a campaign against Mohammedan Egypt in order to protect the Holy Land. However, the leaders of the army cannot pay the transport costs for the Republic of Venice, so they are forced to compromise. The old, almost completely blind, yet energetic and ambitious doge, Enrico Dandolo, offers the crusaders that Venice will also join the campaign with soldiers and transport troops to the eastern battlefield at a discount, if the army first does a small favor in payment
The continuation of the story raises so many exciting questions. What moves everyday people and the leaders of small and large human communities during their actions and decisions? Are there true and eternal values to which we must subordinate our actions? How far can you go in bad compromises for a great and glorious goal? And at all, can the real driving forces of a large-scale, world-shaping action be known? Do ideologies or economic interests shape the course of history? Is there any connection between stated, recognizable goals and real motivations? Who and how do they benefit from the manipulation of masses made up of ordinary people?
