After the death of her depressed mother, Kate Drayton is plagued by unanswered questions and uncertainty about her own future. He runs from Harvard all the way to Charleston, South Carolina, looking for answers to why his family may have been torn apart. He decides to collect information about the failed slave rebellion of 1822, about which his mother had previously conducted research.

Almost two centuries earlier, slave Tom Russell, a talented blacksmith, is faced with an agonizing choice: arm the members of the independent African Methodist Episcopal Church leading the rebellion, or keep his neck off the gallows and protect the woman he loves.

Taking place in alternating time planes, Tormenting Mercy is a fascinating story about secrets, racism, family and love that stubbornly resists the passage of time.
