Moosonee is a small settlement inhabited by Cree Indians in the northern part of Canada, close to the Arctic Circle. All around are dark pine forests, dense, gloomy masses, whose undisturbed tranquility is disturbed only by fur hunters setting snares. Will, the former pilot, lies in a coma in the town's hospital, and his niece, Annie, sits by his bedside every day to talk to him. The two of them once understood each other without words, now it's the power of a word spoken out loud that can bring Will back to life.
Annie has recently returned from a long journey full of dangerous adventures and painful trials. He set out to search for his missing sister, Suzanne, who had left her homeland to pursue a modeling career. Annie, for whom the wilderness, sparkling snowfields, lakes frequented by wild geese, and trout rivers meant everything, is forced to immerse herself in another world. To the world of big cities, where the shiny surface hides depravity and crime, which almost swallows him up for good. Meanwhile, in the darkness of Will's unconsciousness, he retraces the path that led him to the hospital bed. Wandering among the ruins of his life, he recalls the history of himself, his family and community, his people who lost their roots.
This painfully beautiful novel written in two voices about two human destinies is like a river split into two branches, but originating from the same place and going to the same place. The reader dives into the increasingly complicated, thriller-like plot and the exceptionally rich prose language with a beautiful thrill. The stream of stories, sometimes flowing slowly, sometimes suddenly speeding up, moving away from each other in space and time, and then coming together again, rushes unstoppably towards the conclusion, which will forever change the lives of Will and Annie. Between the Pine Trees is a cathartic novel that masterfully captures and depicts the conflict between Indians and modern society.
