When the Oberjarl of the Skands is captured during a raid on the desert Arridi, his first officer, Svengal, turns to the Araluen for help. Halt and Will are with him,
to take the ransom and redeem Erak's freedom, but a member of the royal family is also needed. Princess Cassandra - or Evelin, as Will knows her - convinces her father to let her go with the team. Horace and the wild wanderer Gilan also join the entourage to ensure Evelin's protection.
