As a child psychologist, it is a typical experience for me to be visited by parents who are unsure and struggling with guilt. They experience something in their child, but they do not know whether the given behavior/symptom indicates trouble, nor whether they, as parents, handle the situations that arise well, or what they should do instead. In such cases, they don't realize that most of them are reporting average phenomena, age characteristics, and acceptable or even better parenting behavior and functioning. They don't even think how many thousands of other families struggle with the same difficulties - and similar doubts, anxieties, and pangs of conscience.
I wrote this book with two main goals. On the one hand, I want to alleviate parental anxiety and guilt, so that as mothers and fathers they can feel better in their own skin and spend their energy on finding effective solutions instead of unnecessary fussing. On the other hand, I offer aspects so that they can recognize when they are dealing with a natural age or structural phenomenon, and when they are facing a more serious problem that requires parental or professional intervention. I'm also talking about those situations when, deep down, in the background of childish behavior, there is something completely different than what is visible on the surface. I will list the main blockages from childhood to adolescence, illustrating the individual topics with numerous case descriptions from the experiences of my practice.
