The seventh installment of the #1 bestseller Shardlake series.

Summer of 1549. Two years VIII. After Henry's death, England is headed straight for chaos...

The nominal king, VI. Eduárd is eleven years old. His uncle, Edward Seymour - Earl of Somerset - leads the country as governor. Radical Protestants exterminate the old religion, which creates discontent among the subjects. Meanwhile, the Governor is fighting a long and unsuccessful war with Scotland, and it is feared that France will become involved. The economy is on the brink of collapse, inflation is skyrocketing, and the peasants are beginning to revolt.

Since the old king's death, Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer for Henry's younger daughter, Princess Elizabeth. After one of Elizabeth's mother's distant relatives in Norfolk is murdered in horrific circumstances that could lead to political complications for Elizabeth, Shardlake and his assistant Nicholas Overton go to Norwich for the summer jury on behalf of the duchess. In the city, they meet Shardlake's former assistant, Jack Barak. In the third, they find out that the circumstances of the death are surrounded by many mysteries and dangers, while someone commits the second murder.

And then East Anglia explodes, peasant uprisings break out all over the country. A crowd of thousands of rebels, led by a small farmer, Robert Kett, builds a huge camp outside Norwich, and their goal is to overthrow the power of the landowners. Shardlake has a hard time deciding who he really owes his allegiance to, but at the same time he persistently continues his investigation and discovers that the threads of a gruesome murder connect the rebel camp and the Norfolk nobles...

C. J. Sansom returned after a four-year hiatus with False Prophecies, and it was a huge success worldwide, for example, the novel immediately topped all the bestseller lists in England. The volume also contains the author's historical essay entitled Rethinking Kett's Revolution.
