Product description
Albert Kálmán Kőrössy is an undeservedly forgotten figure in the history of Hungarian architecture at the turn of the century. Although his name has remained hidden from the general public in recent decades, his works may be familiar to many if they think back to the years he spent at the Kölcsey Ferenc High School in Budapest, the window display of the Philanthia flower shop in Váci Street or the former official high school on Hungária Körút. In his oeuvre, not only the neo-baroque forms appear, but also one of the significant European trends of Art Nouveau, the early Jugendstil. He selected plant motifs and animal figures from the domestic flora, the most beautiful examples of which are: his own villa in the Városliget tree row, the Walko house on Aulich street and the Sonnenberg house on Munkácsy street. Between 1906 and 1908, he worked with Ödön Lechner, whose unique world of motifs inspired many works. He was associated with the architect Géza Kiss from the 1910s, and their joint works are characterized by geometric shapes and archaizing, Egyptian decorations: in addition to numerous Budapest rental villas, the former Szabolcsi Agrár Takarékpénztár in Nyíregyháza. Kőrössy regularly appeared before the turn of the century with his decorative facade drawings
at the exhibitions of the Műcsarnok, on one occasion the correspondent of Építő Ipar described his art as "knowledge interwoven with a sense of decoration". His importance is revealed not only through his realized plans, but on his initiative, the regulations for architectural tenders were changed, making the evaluation of the projects faster and fairer.
