Dr. Tamás Horolovszky, a thirty-one-year-old legal advisor, long ago grew tired of his seemingly carefree, comfortable life. But one day he comes across his teenage diary, and meeting Hori, his former self, makes him realize that he has to change his life. After all, that seventeen-year-old boy had desires, dreams, and world-changing plans. Maybe it's not too late, and Dr. Tamás Horolovszky can also make them come true.
The now grown-up hero of József Balatoni's two previous novels, Osztályharc and Kamaszharc, leaves everything behind and gets on a plane and embarks on the biggest adventure of his life. He also has an inseparable travel companion, his diary. He reads it when he needs confirmation and guidance. Where to go, what to do? Finally, he starts working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Haiti, and this work, which sometimes seems like a whirlwind, and at other times inspiring, changes not only his ideas about the world and the meaning of life, but also himself. After all, volunteers from all over the world come to this distant country, and together with them, Tamás can experience both good and bad, joy and sorrow. Love also finds him, but due to a trip gone wrong, he is touched by the wind of death in one of the happiest moments of his life. This shocking experience helps him continue on the inner path on which he left his comfort zone. Now he finds enough strength in himself to fight with himself, his old self and the difficulties that await him.
József Balatoni's twisty and thought-provoking new novel is a story of two roads. One leads us to the big world, to a distant, exciting country, the other to the inner, no less exciting world of the thoughts and emotions of a young man in search of himself. Perhaps this double journey will help us navigate our own lives.
