Product description
This book tells the story of Charles I of Austria, the last ruler of the Habsburg monarchy, who was also crowned Charles IV, King of Hungary. It examines the reign of the young monarch, who succeeded Emperor Franz Joseph in 1916 at the age of twenty-nine and set out to renew his realm through reform.
Charles pursued clear aims: he wanted peace and reform, and he opened peace negotiations with the Central Powers. The book follows how these efforts ran aground against the pressures of the war and the political realities of the time.
In 1918 Charles was forced to renounce both the Austrian and the Hungarian throne. The paperback runs to 300 grams and carries the ISBN 9789636893767.
