What is the difference? - Condenser or dynamic?
Condenser microphone features:
- Extremely sensitive - detects even the tiniest sounds, in any environment
- Very clear sound - with detailed, high-frequency recording
- Requires an external power source (AT2020USB-X is powered via USB)
Average condenser microphones use a lightweight diaphragm and a fixed plate that act as a condenser.
Sound pressure causes this thin membrane to move. This movement changes the capacitance of the circuit, creating an electrical signal. This signal is then recorded by the recording device or amplified by a powered speaker.
Dynamic microphone features:
- Minimizes room noise - perfect for acoustically untreated rooms.
- Smooth audio recording with classic, warm broadcast sound
- It does not require an external power source
Dynamic microphones use a diaphragm (1) attached to a coil around a magnet.
The diaphragm is moved by the changing sound pressure. This moves the coil, which initiates a current of electric voltage through the magnetic field. The device sends an electrical signal to a recording device or speaker, which picks up or amplifies the signal.
Dynamic microphones are extremely durable and can handle very high sound pressure levels.
