The new APU units are not yet made with 7 sqm, but with 12 sqm manufacturing technology, based on the Picasso chip. With the help of the Zen+ architecture, we can expect an IPC growth of around 3% at the same clock, meaning that new things can be performed by the Raven Ridge series. Yes, but it is accompanied by some clock lifts, which gives you the opportunity to accelerate further, as the table below shows. The core clocks rose by 100 MHz and the maximum boost clocks 300 MHz in both cases, but the usual Vega 11 and Vega 8 IGPU is also part of the supply, which is also accelerated, 150 MHz. Memory support has not changed, meaning you still need DDR4-2933 MHz memory modules if you want to drive IGPU. In this case, the PCI Express controller does not offer 4.0 support, as the chip is still based on the previous generation solution.
Among the new APU units, the Ryzen 5 3400G is an innovation that soldering between the chip and the heat conductivity was used instead of paste, resulting in a better heat transfer and better tuning potential. The factory cooler was replaced as an extra, so the former 65 W AMD Wraith Stealth was replaced by the 95 W AMD Wraith Spire. As a result, the system can be quieter during normal use, as there are more reserves in the cooling, but some tuning can also be possible if this is the goal.
It is also important to mention that new APU units support protected 4K video streams, such as Netflix 4K. This is very good news, as the feature was still missing from the previous generation, though many would have wanted it, as the current APU generation was typically used in compact and cost -effective "all -time" systems and in powerful HTPC configurations.
