The work was composed by Abdul Alhazred, who was a mad poet living in Sanaa, Yemen, and who is said to have s. It had its heyday around 700, during the time of the Ommiade caliphs. He visited the ruins of Babylon and the subterranean secrets of Memphis, and spent ten years alone in the great southern desert of Arabia, the Roba el Khaliyeh of the ancients. "Empty space", and for modern Arabs "Dahna" or "Purple" a desert believed to be the abode of harmful evil spirits and monsters of death. Many strange and incredible miracles are told about this desert by those who supposedly visited it. Alhazred spent the last years of his life in Damascus, where the Necronomicon (Al Azif) was written, and where there are many terrible and contradictory stories about his death and disappearance (AD 738).
