Product description
Since ancient times, the rose, the queen of flowers, has been a symbol not only of beauty and youth, love and joy, but also of silence. As a symbol of beauty among the Greeks, it was dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of love; the Horus of spring held a rose, and Homer calls the goddess of dawn, Aurora, rose-fingered. The Hebrews already garlanded themselves with roses during merry feasts, a custom that was popular among the Greeks and Romans as well, especially among the latter, in winter they sometimes brought the rose from Alexandria to Rome on ships. At feasts they rested on cushions lined with rose leaves; and the sybarites slept on rose petals. The rose had no less importance in ancient secret societies. In Egypt and Hellas, those about to be initiated into the Mysteries were given a rose; and the rose was always the decoration of the place of initiation and of the mystery ceremonies. What the initiates, those adorned with the rose, learned as a secret (sub rosa), they had to preserve inviolably.
