Wolfpista, i.e. István Szilágyi, in animal protection, animal rescue, and the years he spent among wolves and bears were faced with unusual situations. These captivating, astonishing, and sometimes shocking stories carry many lessons and are at least as much about us, humans, as they are about animals. We can get to know the often grateful, but often bittersweet and even sad reality of animal protection work. We can gain an insight into the daily lives of wild animals living alongside humans, born in captivity or orphaned. We can find out what the consequences are when someone recklessly ventures into animal husbandry or animal rescue. The true stories in the book hold a mirror before us and can help us to finally realize that keeping an animal is not a basic human right, the animal must be earned.

What does an animal shelter do? In short: he saved animals. I know, this was a rather weak joke, but this is actually the essence of the matter, but at the same time, there is so much behind these two words that the more correct answer would be: burn out. Mentally, physically and financially, you will be ruined very quickly if you are not careful enough. This is also a hard helping job, in fact, I think I can say that it is a profession, even if it is currently one of the unqualified professions. But we can even see it as a profession. In any case, it is a helping activity in the same way as that of doctors, nurses, social workers or teachers, among others. And in the same way, its importance is neither properly paid nor socially recognized.

ISTVÁN SZILÁGYI is the president of the Fehérkeresz Animal Protection League, animal coordinator, and mastermind and head of the Predator Program at Medveotthon. He is one of the best-known activists of domestic animal protection and animal rescue. After thirty years of active animal rescue work, today he primarily deals with capturing wild and dangerous animals, rescuing wild animals, and communicating the real picture of wolves and bears.
