"Privileged minds like to look down on popularity, and even often see it as mediocrity, forgetting that posterity has a choice only among the well-known writers of the past." This volume of W. S. Maugham's life series (Beer and Pretzel) gives a glimpse into the life of literary circles. The nephew of the vicar of Blackstable meets the famous writer Edward Driffield and his wife. The married couple - especially the woman - will be the defining individual of his life... A novelist's friendly envy, jealousy and love, the little secrets of the artist's lifestyle - the writer's life is full of problems - shape the events, while Maugham's ars poetics unfolds before us.
