The story begins in February 1956, when Khrushchev's de-Stalinization process reaches the city of Dolgov, and the leader is first symbolically and then physically removed from the pedestal on which he was placed due to the love of the people, but mainly due to the steadfast efforts of Aglaya Stepanovna Revkina. Following the fate of his heroine, the author recalls episodes from the era of collectivization and the Second World War, and then, in essentially chronological order, leads the reader through the period of the Brezhnev stagnation and perestroika all the way to today's post-Soviet reality. The last lines project a vision of an eerie future.
