Lolita, which at the time was not even published due to its bold sexual content (and because the narrator in the novel is a sympathetic pedophile in some places), is now a real classic, even one of the most famous novels of all time. Two excellent films have been made of it (directed by Stanley Kubrick and Adrian Lyne), and a library of studies have been written about it: scholarly researchers have already analyzed and interpreted almost every single sentence of the author.
Lolita, the "nymph", is one of the most tragic and mysterious heroes in world literature: what we know about her, we only know from Humbert Humbert, the aberrant and sophisticated sadistic narrator of the work - and perhaps that is why she evokes so many different feelings from different readers. To which, of course, the book's amazing richness of language and thought also contributes - Lolita is literally an "unreadable" book, which always reveals new and new beauties when we try to get to the bottom of it.
