Product description
The first Franciscans arrived in the Holy Land eight hundred years ago, in 1217. Saint Francis of Assisi also met the Sultan in 1219. In connection with the anniversary, the volume reviews the history of the Franciscans in the Holy Land, collects the main data and highlights the most significant moments. Today's events draw attention to the Christian communities operating in the Holy Land - for centuries, the Franciscans represented Western, Latin Christianity here, and their operations were accompanied by papal supervision. For eight hundred years, they have stood at the crossroads of West and East, religions and cultures, great powers and historical forces. The Holy Land area of the Franciscan order is called "Custodia", its center in Jerusalem is the San Salvatore monastery, whose tower is still a defining element of the cityscape. The volume does not lack Hungarian aspects either: the travelogues of several Hungarian Franciscans are still considered a source today.
