In this 16th-century Dutch story, the motifs of the traditional Marian miracle are mixed with elements of the Faustus tale. Marika, an orphan, is raised by her uncle, a priest. One day he is accused of false accusations, and in his desperation hearing the curses hurled at him, he becomes the devil's body and soul. For years, he lives in the belief that he will be damned, but after seeing a strange game at the fair, he understands that he still has a chance for God's forgiveness.
