Product description
The shocking and true story of Phiona Mutesi, a chess prodigy from a Ugandan slum.
It was in 2005 that while nine-year-old Phiona Mutesi was looking for food, she followed her brother and ended up on a dusty veranda. This is where he met Robert Katende.
The missionary Katende, a former war refugee, had an unrealistic dream floating in front of his eyes: he wanted to give the children living in the slums of Katwe the opportunity for a better life through chess. This game is so unknown there that they don't even have a word for it. Robert put down his chessboard and began to teach. At first, the children only came to it for the free food, but over time, many of them fell in love with the game, in which - just like in their own lives - you have to overcome great obstacles and fight for survival. Among the children, one girl proved to be exceptionally talented: Phiona.
By the age of eleven, Phiona had already won a national junior championship, and at the age of fifteen she became a national champion. Today, she has become a female master candidate - she is the first woman in the history of her country to achieve this - and dreams of the grandmaster title, which is the highest level of chess. But in order to achieve this goal, he has to deal with everyday life in one of the most volatile countries in the world.
