Anyone who turns the pages of this novel already reads about a couple in love posing naked in front of a mirror, later on hot and not so hot togethers, a secret brothel, a small-town prima donna bathed in champagne. "I want to hug your naked body" - this is his characteristic sentence, nudity is one of the dominant words of the ironically critical work set in the years after 1945. Although Menyasszonok, vángyény - the title does not in the least cover the actual relations between women and men - is one of the best-dressed Hungarian novels. Not only because its characters are convincingly authentic in suits, mini-suits, sports jackets or even negligees. They dress up in their environment, in their apartment, in their confusing transactions, in their spirit-calling séances, in their illusions, even in the flames of hell.
