Szerb Antal - A pendragon-legenda (2021)

My way is to begin with the beginning, Lord Byron said, and he only knew what was appropriate when it came to noble Englishmen. In the end, all my stories begin when I was born in Budapest and after a short time my name was the same as it is now: János Bátky. I didn't know that then. But for the sake of brevity, I am omitting the thirty-two years between my birth and my acquaintance with the Earl of Gwynedd, during the World War. I refuse, because I am not the hero of my extraordinary story, but he is. I will turn to the history of our acquaintance. Towards the end of the season, at the beginning of the summer, I was at an evening gathering at Lady Malmsbury-Croft. The lady was a great well-wisher of mine, dating back to when I was Donald Campbell's scientific secretary. Because in terms of my occupation, my occupation is to be at the disposal of older Englishmen who are obsessed with doing some intellectual work.
