From the second half of the 18th century onwards, the concept of Bildung (education, culture) played a distinguished role in both pedagogical and philosophical thinking in the German-speaking world. This concept was capable of uniting some fundamental, but in some respects contradictory, aspirations and intellectual needs, which characterized the bourgeois Germany in this period. The establishment of the Bildungsbürgertum, the educated citizenry, required a unified system of educational institutions, but at the same time, the individual's inner freedom and development also depended on the cultivation of his strengths. Philosophy, literature (see Bildungsroman) and pedagogy all tried to explain and interpret the German citizen's self-interpretation, existential alternatives, institutional and political possibilities from their own perspectives. The novelty and significance of this study volume is that the writings included in it interpret the problem of Bildung from a philosophical, literary and pedagogical point of view.
