The volume presents the relationship between Hungarian educational science and philosophy from the beginning of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century. Some of the studies place this issue in a broader historical context, primarily the rich connections to German pedagogical and philosophical thought are presented. Until the middle of the 20th century, the excellences of Hungarian educational science were also trained philosophers, the studies in the volume depict the development of Hungarian educational philosophy through the examples of István Schneller, Béla Tankó, Sándor Karácsony and Lajos Prohászka. In the middle of the 20th century, as a result of the communist takeover, the lively relationship between philosophy and education suddenly broke, and the ideological Marxist influence became hegemonic in a short time. The volume deals in depth with the period between 1948-89, objectively presenting the main processes and those fragment-like, often hidden aspirations, which represented the survival of educational philosophical thinking. The volume fills in gaps and represents an important contribution to the historical self-reflection of Hungarian educational science.
