Product description
Why did I write a novel about the First World War? several people asked. Why? - the reader can think too. I care about what I live in. Our everyday life - my country - the reality of Europe. But today's stories began a hundred years ago: in 1914. My novel is about this past, which also defines the twenty-first century." In the days before the outbreak of the First World War, Ádám Kiss, who had just graduated from high school in Szeged, went on a French reward trip. He drifts into the war in Paris. As a mounted soldier, he fights through the European battlefields. He is taken prisoner by the Germans as a French hussar. After his release, he was ordered first to the Russian front and then to the southern battlefield with the Austro-Hungarian regiments fighting alongside the German troops. In the battles near the Marne, on the banks of the Bug, at the Piave, he is sent to attack, thus he ends up in the depths of the night of history, where everyone hates the opponent because his life is at stake. He who does not kill will be killed. Iván Sándor's book is the first Hungarian novel about the former war, which takes place on the entire European terrain, on the western, eastern, and southern fronts, in general staff headquarters, and in imperial palaces. Its events accompany Ádám Kiss at the pace of the cavalry charges, until the unexpected final turn of his fate. In the depths of the night, 1914 makes the reader's experience the motto chosen by János Pilinszky: "...what happened somehow cannot end.
