In various scientific disciplines, the concept of emergence is typically applied to those higher-level, comprehensive phenomena whose description cannot be traced back to more fundamental, ultimately physical principles. In this sense, we can talk about emergence in the case of the specific spatial distribution of different biological individuals, the comprehensive, functional properties of the mind, the partial quantum Hall effect or even simpler phenomena such as the fascinating shapes of Conway's "Game of Life". Today, the concept of emergence is ubiquitous in scientific disciplines, but this has an unfortunate consequence: there is no generally accepted idea of what exactly emergent phenomena actually are. The concept of emergence was originally linked to an independent existential theory. , which accepted the independent reality of comprehensive, higher-level phenomena in contrast to the position of materialism that is widespread in science today, but denied that this was the consequence of an independent substance. As a result, the concept of emergence was closely connected with the idea of evolution: emergent phenomena unfolded during an evolutionary development in accordance with specific, emergent principles from the initial material world. the predecessor of the volume approached the concept of emergence mostly from the point of view of evolution. This volume does the same from a much more scientific and more traditional philosophical point of view.
