Product description
Oscar Wilde (originally known as Fingal O'Flahertie Wills) was born in Dublin in 1854 and died in Paris in 1900. Wilde's name was taboo in literary life for decades, after a scandal revealed that he was gay. He went to prison because of it, then died of an ear disease acquired there, after converting to the Catholic religion in the last hour of his life. It was only in 1954, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, that he took his rightful place in both education and official criticism. During his student years at Oxford, he stood out from his peers not only with his striking knowledge and well-readness, but also with his constant breaking of norms. His large checkered tweed jacket, peacock blue tie and wavy-brimmed hat made him unmistakable. The satirical weekly Punch started a series of caricatures about him, but Wilde did not mind this, he took it as free advertising and increased his popularity. In 1881, he conquered America and Canada, visited the salons there with his work entitled Poems, published at his own expense, and became famous and rich at the same time. His most famous work is The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Our current volume was selected by poet and translator Dezső Tandori. The afterword reveals that Wilde's colorful personality was drawn to his attention by a sports magazine found in a trash can.
