Biologically active Quatrefolic® folate 
The importance of folate has been recognized for more than 50 years. The names folic acid and folate are often used interchangeably for the water-soluble vitamin B9, which is essential for maintaining normal cell functions and health.

We can distinguish 4 different generations of folate compounds, from folate found naturally in foods to the innovative Quatrefolic®.

Folic acid is converted into biologically active folate in a multi-step process. Since synthetic 2nd generation folic acid is an oxidized form, it must first be converted to reduced folate, and only then can it fulfill a biological function in the human body.

Quatrefolic® represents the fourth generation of folate, which has long-term stability, excellent water solubility, increased bioavailability and safety.
Folate and MTHFR enzyme 
In addition to several other factors (e.g. pregnancy, aging), genetic factors also play an important role in influencing folate levels, which can largely be attributed to the C677T polymorphism of the gene encoding the 5,10-methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme. This so-called point mutation causes an amino acid change in the enzyme that affects its functioning, resulting in a 25-60% drop in its activity. According to a representative Hungarian survey in 2001, this gene mutation can affect up to 56% of the Hungarian population, which leads to a decrease in the amount of active L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate in people affected by this gene mutation.  (source: Czeizel E, Tímár L, Botto L. Quatrefolic® has a positive evaluation by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and GRAS status (generally accepted as safe).  The glucosamine component of the folate form in our product comes from glucosamine HCl, which is not of animal origin, but is produced from chitin isolated from a specific strain of Aspergillus niger, so it can be consumed by people sensitive to crustaceans.

Supplemental folate intake increases the level of maternal folate supply. Low maternal folate levels are one of the risk factors for the development of esophageal obstruction in the developing fetus. The beneficial effect can be achieved with an additional folate intake of 400 µg per day for at least one month before conception and three months after conception.
